Patchouli requires specific soil conditions, which is why it cannot be cultivated continuously on the same land for an extended period. This is why patchouli plantations are usually moved from one location to another.

Why Has Patchouli Cultivation Migrated Across These Regions?
Patchouli requires specific soil conditions, which is why it cannot be cultivated continuously on the same land for an extended period. The soil contains essential components and nutrients needed to produce a good harvest and high-quality oil, but over time these nutrients are depleted. This is why patchouli plantations are usually moved from one location to another.
Patchouli is adaptable to various soil types. It thrives best in deep, loose, fertile, slightly acidic, loamy soil that is rich in humus and nutrients. The ideal soil pH for patchouli growth ranges between 5.5 and 7.5.
The soil requires a long period to naturally restore its nutrients before it can be replanted with patchouli at optimal quality. For this reason, farmers often grow patchouli alongside other crops such as cocoa or oil palm as alternatives, in case one crop does not sufficiently support their livelihoods.
